Beijing, Jing for short, is the nation's political, economic, cultural and educational center as well as China's most important center for international trade and communications. Together with Xian, Luoyang, Kaifeng, Nanjing and Hangzhou, Beijing is one of the six ancient cities in China. It has been the heart and soul of politics and society throughout its long history and consequently there is an unparalleled wealth of discovery to delight and intrigue travelers as they explore Beijing's ancient past and enjoy its exciting modern development.

As the capital of the People's Republic of China, Beijing is located in northern China, close to Tianjin Municipality and partially surrounded by Hebei Province. The city covers an area of more than 16,410 square kilometers (6,336 square miles) and has a population of 14.93 million people.

Tiananmen

Beijing is a city with four distinct seasons. Its best is late spring and autumn. But autumn is taken as the golden tourist season of the year since there is sometimes in the spring of recent years, a yellow wind. We suggest tourists visit Beijing during the months of May, September, and October when people can enjoy bright sunshine and blue skies. An abundance of international class performances are presented in May. If you like winter, you will have other chances to appreciate another landscape of Beijing. After skiing in Beihai and viewing the snowy sights on West Hill, enjoying the steaming hotpot is the best choice, which is really the fun of tour in Beijing. Please keep warm and remember to bring your down garments and sweaters when you visit Beijing in the winter.

How can one city boast so many phenomenal places? Beijing's long and illustrious history started some 500,000 years ago. It is here that the ancestors of modern Homo sapiens, Peking men, lived in caves. Records show that Beijing has been an inhabited city for more than three thousand years and has endured invasions by warlords and foreign powers, devastating fires, the rise and fall of powerful imperial dynasties and has emerged each time as a strong and vibrant city. For more than 800 years, Beijing was a capital city - from the Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368) to the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties. Thirty-four emperors have lived and ruled the nation in Beijing and it has been an important trading city from its earliest days.

Forbidden CityAlthough now Beijing is a modern and fashionable city complete with a full 21st Century vitality, you can experience authentic Beijing life and become acquainted with 'old Beijing' by exploring its many teahouses, temple fairs, Beijing's Hutong and Courtyard and enjoy the Peking Opera. Add any or all of these to your Beijing tour and you will leave with a feeling of special appreciation in your heart for this ancient city that has truly seen it all and tells its story with matchless grace, charm and vigor.

With the biggest central square in the world - Tian'anmen Square, the Forbidden City that is the largest and best-preserved imperial palace complex, a superbly preserved section of the Great Wall,as well as the largest sacrificial complex in the world - the Temple of Heaven, Beijing attracts both domestic and foreign visitors who all come to wonder at its century-old history and unique cultural relics.

Dwelling too much on the historical past of Beijing may give tourists the false impression that it is little more than an ancient city in style but this is definitely not so! Strolling around Beijing, you'll find it has much in common with any other great metropolis elsewhere in today's world. There are towering skyscrapers; busy shopping malls and an endless stream of traffic that makes the city much the same as others. The most famous and popular commercial circles and commercial pedestrian streets are predominantly located near the Yansha Shopping Mall, Tiananmen and Wangfujing Street, Guomao Shopping Mall, Qianmen Street and Xidan Street, etc. However, although you will find multinational chains with their own brands to offer, nowhere else on earth will you find such a variety of gourmet Chinese restaurants offering the very best of the eight different styles of Chinese cuisine as well as western style dishes. Modern hotels abound, each offering the highest standards of service and convenience.

Great WallAfter a day's Beijing tours, nighttime can hold other surprises for you. These can vary from traditional performances such as the Beijing Opera, acrobatics and martial arts to modern ones including concerts, ballroom dancing, pubs and clubs. Each and every one has its individual enchantment for the tourist. No description of our capital city is complete without mention of the friendly people who throng the streets. Everywhere you will encounter smiling faces and a warm welcome, especially from the children who love to say 'Hello!' All these things add up to truly make your visit a cultural experience of a lifetime.

China, one of the countries that can boast of an ancient civilization, has a long and mysterious history - almost 5,000 years of it! Like most other great civilizations of the world, China can trace her culture back to a blend of small original tribes which have expanded till they became the great country we have today.

Emperor throneIt is recorded that Yuanmou man is the oldest hominoid in China and the oldest dynasty is Xia Dynasty. From the long history of China, there emerge many eminent people that have contributed a lot to the development of the whole country and to the enrichment of her history. Among them, there are emperors like Li Shimin (emperor Taizong of the Tang), philosophers like Confucius, great patriotic poets like Qu Yuan and so on.

Chinese society has progressed through five major stages - Primitive Society, Slave Society, Feudal Society, Semi-feudal and Semi-colonial Society, and Socialist Society. The rise and fall of the great dynasties forms a thread that runs through Chinese history, almost from the beginning. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1st, 1949, China has become a socialist society and become stronger and stronger.

keropok lekor terengganu

keropok lekor

Keropok lekor, anyone?

Tasty, crunchy, fishy, yummy are likely some of the words you’ll come across by Malaysians and visitors alike, in describing the popular traditional snack, keropok lekor.

Keropok lekor, a specialty of the state of Terengganu and states situated along the east coast Peninsular Malaysia is a heavenly indulgence with its crunchy, slightly fishy taste, a popular treat among locals.

It’s slightly greyish colour, ground fish mixed with sago flour, is sliced into chunky sized- bits before frying into a warm, golden hue. It is best eaten, hot off the wok.

The fragrant smell of the keropok, simmering gently in a wok, awakens the senses. For keropok lekor enthusiasts, it is a refreshing smell, and instantly makes one hungry!

De-boned fish such as ikan selayang (decapterus russellii), ikan tamban (sardine-like fish), ikan parang (herring) or ikan kerisi is used to make the keropok (crackers). Ikan selayang is popular as the fish has a sweet taste. Mixed with sago flour, it is kneaded into long dough, cut, and boiled for several hours.

There are two ways to make keropok lekor. The first is to dry the (newly) boiled dough under the sun. Once dried, it will be sliced thinly to make pre-fried keropok lekor or known as keropol lekor keeping (slices).

The other variety is to cut the boiled dough and deep-fry it into a heated wok. This is favoured by many, as this preserves the excellent taste of the keropok. (Make you sure you don’t make the mistake of washing the boiled fish, as this most certainly kills the taste!)

Eaten freshly fried from the wok with some special chilli sauce dipping, it is certainly a popular snack time choice!

Far and away the most exciting city in Florida, MIAMI is a stunning and often intoxicatingly beautiful place. Awash with sunlight-intensified natural colors, there are moments – when the neon-flashed South Beach skyline glows in the warm night and the palm trees sway in the breeze – when a better-looking city is hard to imagine. Even so, people, not climate or landscape, are what make Miami unique. Half of the two million population is Hispanic, the vast majority Cubans. Spanish is the predominant language almost everywhere – in many places it's the only language you'll hear, and you'll be expected to speak at least a few words – and news from Havana, Caracas or Managua frequently gets more attention than the latest word from Washington, DC.

Just a century ago Miami was a swampy outpost of mosquito-tormented settlers. The arrival of the railroad in 1896 gave the city its first fixed land-link with the rest of the continent, and cleared the way for the Twenties property boom. In the Fifties, Miami Beach became a celebrity-filled resort area, just as thousands of Cubans fleeing the regime of Fidel Castro began arriving in mainland Miami. The Sixties and Seventies brought decline, and Miami's reputation in the Eighties as the vice capital of the USA was at least partly deserved. As the cop show Miami Vice so glamorously underlined, drug smuggling was endemic; as well, in 1980 the city had the highest murder rate in America. Since then, though, much has changed for two very different reasons. First, the gentrification of South Beach helped make tourism the lifeblood of the local economy again in the early Nineties. Second, the city's determined wooing of Latin America brought rapid investment, both domestic and international: many US corporations run their South American operations from Miami and certain neighborhoods, such as Key Biscayne, are now home to thriving communities of expat Peruvians, Colombians and Venezuelans.

The airline's attempt to pass along credit-card fees has angered agents and may signal a wider conflict looming over ticket distribution

As U.S. airlines seek to cull every last cost from their operations, travel agents are gearing up for what one agent calls a "battle royal" over a recent decision by United Airlines (UAUA) to pass along credit-card processing fees to 28 travel agencies. Those costs, which amount to 2% to 3% of the price of an airline ticket on average, are currently paid by airlines as part of the ticketing process. Wall Street is eager to assess whether United's move will prove successful, given that shifting such costs to agents and fliers could represent billions in savings across the industry.

Agents argue that United's card-fee experiment makes no logical sense because such a small agency group will not yield much in cost savings for such a large carrier. Instead, some agents contend the airline is hoping to spark an industry-wide assault on distribution costs, with travel agents' card fees merely the first front.

In a July 17 letter responding to 13 members of the U.S. House of Representatives who expressed concern about the matter, United says its change is limited and "in no way was intended to be a broad move in the marketplace, as has been interpreted by outside organizations." The Chicago airline also agreed to offer a 60-day extension on the fees to agencies that request one. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) also wrote to United CEO Glenn Tilton in the past week, urging him to delay the program.

The company's new stance on card fees is designed "to improve travel agency performance and to more closely align them with us, to create a relationship that is mutually beneficial," United spokesman Robin Urbanski says.

Driving Sales to Airline Web Sites

Ending the payment of card-processing fees to agents is likely to force many of them to book United tickets on the airline's own Web site. "It would be a pain. But yeah, it could be done," says one Colorado agent, who declined to be identified because she is negotiating with United over the issue. "Ultimately, I think it might all go to that."

Airlines have long sought to drive sales to their own sites as a way to control costs, and much of the leisure travel business has migrated there. Indeed, Southwest Airlines (LUV) controls virtually its entire ticket inventory by largely restricting sales to its Web site. However, corporate travel remains largely the purview of travel agencies or, at larger corporations, internal booking systems overseen by agents or agency-affiliated travel management companies. The American Society of Travel Agents says its members generated $69 billion in sales for airlines last year, much of it in corporate travel, where companies have designed an array of cost controls on employee travel.

"At some point, consumers are going to figure out what’s going to happen to them and they’re going to rebel," Paul Ruden, senior vice-president for legal and industry affairs at the agents' trade group in Alexandria, Va., says of rising travel costs.

ASTA says United's campaign could ultimately force agents to accept liability for an airline's failure to perform if the merchant relationship changes and the agent is no longer an intermediary, but the vendor responsible for the service. Indeed, that issue—and whether United's change may alter consumer protections in the Fair Credit Billing Act—appears to have piqued the interest of some in Congress. Agents envision a worst-case scenario in which they are left as unsecured creditors in an airline bankruptcy, with scant recourse to recover money they have already paid the carrier. United says that won't happen.
